Astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) and collaborators studied NGC 3785 and discovered the longest tidal tail ever recorded, measuring 1.27 million light years. This tidal tail contains star-forming clumps and is the site of a forming ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) at its tip, driven by gravitational interactions with a neighboring galaxy. The research, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters, advances the understanding of faint, low surface brightness galaxies.
